Benevolent Society of St Patrick

The Benevolent Society of St Patrick was founded in 1783 to assist poor and distressed persons of Irish descent and their dependants resident in and about London, irrespective of creed.

Now administered by the London Irish Centre, the charity provides a range of services to help people who are Irish or of Irish descent, who are in need and live in the Greater London area.

Grants are available to help Irish people living in London who are in need with:

  • Clothing or footwear
  • Essential household equipment
  • Emergency support for winter heating needs
  • Costs relating to funerals
  • Expenses involved in moving into new accommodation or short-term (up to three nights) emergency accommodation
  • Where appropriate, travel costs incurred by eligible applicants to the Republic of Ireland.

Grants are generally paid up to a maximum of £250. Applications of between £250 - £500 can be awarded on a discretionary basis in exceptional circumstances.

Wherever relevant, applicants are expected to have made a prior, unsuccessful application to a council-run local welfare assistance scheme or be able to provide reasons why they did not do so.

  • Social welfare advice (including benefits, housing, debt, Irish passports, Irish birth certificates, access to health and social care services)
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Befriending
  • Day centre and outreach social group
  • Activities for older people.

Who is eligible?

People who are Irish or of Irish descent, who are in need and live in the Greater London area.

How to apply?

Download an application form on the London Irish Centre website and post or email the completed form the the Society. 

Applications can be made by post to the Administrator through third-party voluntary sector or local authority agencies, who should request the relevant application documents from us.

Applications can also be made via direct contact with the London Irish Centre's Advice and Outreach team.
