Bristol Charities

Bristol Charities mission is to provide opportunities and support for people and communities within a 10 mile radius of Bristol City Centre to improve lives through grants, housing and charitable projects.

Our work ranges from:

  • Providing excellent quality almshouse accommodation with support on site in a safe community setting

  • Giving to those in need through individual grants

  • Running community development projects for people aged 50+ to facilitate inspiring social activities that enrich lives, reduce isolation/loneliness and promote active participation

  • Supporting individuals to maintain independence through a community support service. This support offers flexible individualised support with daily living skills and help to maintain social connections

  • Providing educational grants where no loans or public funds are available.

Grants

Grants are only awarded through approved vouchers via an intermediary organisation for the following purposes:

  • White goods (washing machines, fridges, freezers, electric cookers)

  • Small electrical equipment (vacuums and microwaves)

  • Carpets

  • Furniture

  • Cots

  • Beds and mattresses

  • Starter packs (kitchen/crockery)

  • Respite breaks for carers

  • Nursing/care services to provide breaks for carers

  • Support to carers after the death of the person being cared for.

Who is eligible?

People who live within a 10-mile radius of Bristol City Centre and are:

  • In need, hardship or distress

  • In poor health, have a disability or are convalescing

  • Carers who have limited means.

What the charity doesn't fund

We don't fund the following items:

  • Clothing

  • Tumble dryers

  • TVs

  • Personal computers

  • Audio equipment

  • Baby equipment

  • Fees for people in care

  • Rent arrears or other debts.

How to apply?

Application is through an intermediary organisation who apply on behalf of the applicant once they have been approved as a sponsor - for example: Citizens Advice workers, health and social care professionals including social workers, teachers, teaching assistants.

To apply to be an approved sponsor, fill in the form on the Bristol Charities website.

Applicants will have to have an income and outgoings assessment and provide proof of any benefits they receive.

Enquiries are looked at as soon as they are submitted. Grant applications take around one week to process.

The charity replies to all applicants, whether or not they are able to help.
