British School Charity

The British School Charity, a subsidiary trust of the British & Foreign School Society (BFSS), provides grants to support the education of children and young people aged under 25 in the Saffron Walden area.

Within the Saffron Walden area, we can fund individuals who need financial assistance, and schools and other groups with an educational purpose. ‘Education’ includes sports, arts and music, and preparation for work as well as school subjects.

Individual support can include help with the cost of fees/living expenses, clothing or equipment for a school or other educational activity, preparing for work or travel with an educational purpose.

Our funding must not substitute for usual state education finance but it can supplement it. The grants are solely for educational purposes.

For more information, see the British & Foreign School website information on the British School Charity

How to apply?

Applications can be made by the individual or a family member. We also accept applications on behalf of an individual. These usually come from educational organisations such as schools and colleges.

Applicants can apply using the application form link on the British & Foreign School Society website or by contacting the charity by email, phone or post.

Application process

Applications are usually looked at twice a year in April and October when the local committee meets. Applicants are usually told the outcome of their application the following month. We reply to all applicants, whether or not we can help.

Funds are either given directly to an organisation for their benefit or to be used for the benefit of an individual who has approached us for funding. We do occasionally give funding directly to individuals but prefer to give to an organisation who will manage the funds for us.

Other information

Schools and other organisations can be helped with special projects to support children/young people who are disadvantaged, have special educational needs or a disability.

The British & Foreign School Society also has a BFSS Main Fund that funds UK-registered charities who are undertaking specific educational projects.
