Newlife - the Charity for Disabled Children

We do not provide cash grants but can help with buying equipment, including specialist seating, wheelchairs, beds and communication aids.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for help from Newlife Charity, you need to be:

  • A child or young person under the age of 19, and
  • A UK resident, and
  • Have a significant disability which affects your daily life, a life threatening/life limiting condition or be diagnosed as terminally ill.

We do not give cash grants. Our grants are given via the supplier of goods/services or by giving items. There are some items which we ask families to contribute to because they would likely have had to spend money on buying a basic model. For car seats, we request a contribution of 20% of the overall cost. We ask for a £90 contribution for beds and £50 for buggies.

We cannot fund adaptations to cars or properties therapy/treatment costs, white goods or holidays.

How to apply?

An equipment grant application form needs to be completed. This can be completed and submitted online via the Newlife Charity website or an application form can be downloaded from the website or requested by calling the Newlife Charity Nurse Helpline on 0800 902 0095 (free from UK mobiles and landlines and available Mondays to Fridays from 9.00 am - 5.00 pm (7.00 pm on Wednesdays).

There are two parts to the application form:

  • Part 1: Family Form - to be completed by parent/main carer
  • Part 2: Professionals Support Form - to be completed by an appropriate local supporting professional.

The type of professional depends on the equipment needed. For instance, for specialised seating, an assessment by a paediatric occupational therapist or physiotherapist would be needed, to ensure postural and other clinical care needs are considered. For other items that are less tailored, the charity would accept other types of professionals to support the application. Check with Newlife Charity what kind of professional will be needed to support the items the child/young person needs. We also require a quote for the requested equipment (including any VAT and delivery costs).

You will usually know the outcome of your application within two weeks but this is dependant on the demand there is for services.
