Railway Benevolent Institution

One-off and quarterly grants are available to current, former and retired railway workers and their families in times of need.

Examples of things we can help with include housing debts, family welfare, unforeseen emergencies as well as other financial hurdles families face.

The charity also provides information on issues such as debt, benefits and retirement.

Who is eligible?

 Current and former railway people and their families who are in need. You may be eligible if:

  • You have worked in the railway industry for at least one year 
  • You have less than £6,000 in savings if a single person, or less than £10,000 if a couple. 

What we cannot help with

  • Residential care home top up fees
  • Private medical treatments where available on the NHS
  • Non-Priority Debts

You can also phone or email the The Railway Fund to request an application form to be sent to you by post. Applications are considered all year round.

Please note that if you are applying for funeral costs you will need to complete both the application form and the funeral grant form.
