Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI)

R.A.B.I. can give charitable grants to people of all ages who currently work or have worked in agriculture in England or Wales as a farmer, farm manager or farm worker and their dependants. Applicants must have savings/capital of less than £10,000 if single or less than £15,000 if a couple.

If retired, the person on whose work history the application is based, must have worked in farming on a full time basis for at least ten years after the legal school leaving age and prior to state retirement age and it must have provided their sole or main income throughout. Exceptions can be made if all work had to be given up before state pension age due to chronic severe ill health or disability or if the person served in the Women’s Land Army.

This includes farmers, farm managers, farm workers, agricultural workers, agricultural contractors, former members of the Women’s Land Army.

Who is eligible?

Farmers, farm managers, farm workers, agricultural workers, agricultural contractors, former members of the Women's Land Army and their dependants who have savings/capital of less than £10,000 if single or less than £15,000 if a couple. Retired applicants must normally be 65 years old or older and have worked full time in farming for at least ten years in England or Wales. Exceptions can be made if the applicant has been forced to give up all employment due to illness or disability.

There is an emergency fund available for working farmers and farm workers who are experiencing exceptionally difficult circumstances of a temporary nature.

No grants for business costs and debts, private education fees and private medical costs.

How to apply?

Applications can be made by an individual or a third party, such as a social worker. Apply by telephoning 0808 2819490 for free, or by letter or email: grants@rabi.org.uk. All new applicants will be visited in their home by a regional welfare officer. The grants committee meets every 6 - 8 weeks to consider applications, but grants that are urgently needed can be considered between meetings.

Applications are considered all year round and all applicants will be contacted about the trustees' decision.
