The Coal Industry Benevolent Trust

The Trust assists mineworkers, former mineworkers and their dependants pursue higher education courses at universities, colleges or other educational institutes in the United Kingdom.

Who is eligible?

Mineworkers, former mineworkers and their dependants who are studying at, or want to study at higher education courses at universities, colleges or other educational institutes in the United Kingdom. Applicants must be 17 and either:

  • are currently employed in the coal mining industry, or were employed in the coal mining industry and who have taken up full time further education within 5 years of having left the mining industry
  • the dependent children or other dependants of any employee of the coal mining industry or former employee. Please note that dependent children are only eligible for help if their parent left the industry because of age or ill health and did not take up another job. This parent should have also worked in the industry for 20 years.

Applications may be considered from the dependants of those employees or former employees who had less than 20 years’ service in the industry but more than 10 years.
