The Fenton Trust

We provide grants to students aged 14 and over who are on a further education course at a college which is affiliated with Family Action. Grants may be given to pay for "additional costs" such as clothing and/or equipment required for the course, travel, examination costs, computers/laptops.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be studying at an organisation affiliated to Family Action’s Educational Grants Service.
  • Be studying on a further education course, including pre-access and access.
  • On a low income (primarily in receipt of benefits). This includes low waged applicants
  • Have right of residency in the UK or be an asylum seeker (we cannot give grants to oversees students)
  • Be 14 years of age or over.
  • There are currently no restrictions on the subject of study but preference will be given to those studying a “commercial subject” (e.g. IT, bookkeeping, accounting, etc.).

What we can't give grants for:

  • Course fees
  • Costs already incurred,
  • Items provided by the college for the course
  • Childcare
  • Overseas students/ study outside of the UK
  • Higher education courses
  • Postgraduate study
  • Personal expenditure not directly associated with study such as food, clothing, household bills.

How to apply?

Please note that individuals should not apply directly, but that applicants should apply via their further education college. To find out if your college is affiliated with Family Action, please contact students services at the college.

Applications are considered between 1st October and 30th June each year, as long as funds are available. Family Action will inform the college if the application is successful or unsuccessful.

Other information

Family Action offers a variety of support services, such as emotional support, support to access employment, and children's centres. Family Action supports parents to access work and the benefits this brings to the whole family. We provide practical support in accessing pre-employment training, applying for jobs and interviewing and advising on accessing affordable childcare.
