The Film & Television Charity

The main charitable aim of the Film & Television Charity is the relief of poverty or hardship for people who have worked behind the scenes in film, television (including aspects of digital broadcast) and cinema.

This includes:

  • Cinema staff and managers

  • Film and television writers, directors, producers and editors

  • Crew

  • Hair and makeup

  • Location managers and props

  • Logistics.

Who is eligible?

People who have worked behind the scenes in film, television and cinema in the UK for at least two years and are in need because of ill health, redundancy or other circumstances.

Applicants may have worked in pre-production, production, post-production, distribution, broadcast or exhibition and home entertainment.

This includes:

  • Cinema staff and managers

  • Film and television writers, directors, producers and editors

  • Crew

  • Hair and makeup

  • Location managers and props

  • Logistics.

Applicants must also:

  • Have less than £10,000 in savings.
  • Be in receipt of all State benefits applicable to applicant.
  • Have received debt counselling from either Citizens Advice or one of the large free debt advice agencies, i.e Stepchange, Debt Advice Network and Christians Against Poverty.
  • Have approached their local authority for help from their Social Fund (if applicable) and applied for Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) from the local authority (if applicable).

Other information

The Film & TV Support Line has been created by the charity to provide a source of independent and confidential help to people in the industry.  It is operated by professionally-trained staff with expertise in supporting people facing a range of difficulties, including:

  • Bullying and harassment at work

  • Support for depression and anxiety

  • Debt and money advice

  • Specialist addiction counselling

  • Bereavement counselling

  • Legal advice and support

  • Financial assistance.
