The John Wallace Trust Scheme


John Wallace Trust Scheme awards bursaries to secondary school pupils living in the upper Nithsdale area, who are about to enter or are attending higher education.

Financial assistance can also be awarded to students who may be travelling for an educational purpose.

Please note: The scheme is open to applicants in May each year and closes on 31 December.

Who is eligible?

Secondary school pupils living in the upper Nithsdale area, who are about to enter or are attending higher education. The area of benefit includes the electoral wards of Kirkland, Kello, Crichton, Douglas, Cairn, Morton and the part of Dalswinton Ward lying outwith the parish of Dumfries.

Awards may be allocated to pupils who are about to enter or are attending:

  • The Barony College or another institution specialising in Agriculture and allied sciences
  • University or another institute of Higher Education,
  • Open University courses.

Financial assistance can be up to five years. Amounts paid can change each year depending on the number of applicants received. Successful students are required to complete a certificate of attendance form each year to ensure payment.

How to apply?

The scheme is open to applicants in May each year and closes on 31 December.

Application forms are available on the John Wallace Trust Scheme webpage on the Dumfries and Galloway Council website or from relevant secondary schools.

Applicants will be informed of their success by May of the following year. Payments are usually made by cheque once the college or university has confirmed the applicant's place. New applicants will be asked to request this confirmation for their first year.
