The Society of Authors Pension Fund

Annual grants are available for writers or authors who are either aged 60 or over or are completely unable to work.

Last updated on 16 July 2019

Who is eligible?

Authors or writers over 60 who have been a member of the Society of Authors for at least ten years. You do not need to be a member of the Society of Authors.

What we can't help with

Please note that we are unable to offer grants for:

  • Publication costs/those who are in difficulty because they have contributed towards publication costs
  • Student tuition fees
  • A specific writing project. However, the SoA does have another grant that offers financial assistance for writing projects. Visit their website for more information: http://www.societyofauthors.org/Grants/Grants-for-works-in-progress

How to apply?

Download an application from the website: http://www.societyofauthors.org/Grants/Grants-for-writers-in-need . Return the completed application by post or email with a covering letter, which briefly sets out your circumstances.

We are usually able to notify applicants of the outcome within around three weeks. Please feel free to contact a member of staff in confidence for an informal chat. 020 7373 6642.

Other information

The SoA offers paid membership to professional writers and illustrators. Membership allows access to events, training and resources on issues such as financial advice, career advice, health and wellbeing and bereavement.
